Want to learn a new hobby?

A local seamstress is hosting a monthly beginner’s sewing class, in conjunction with Garvin County OSU Extension.

“I have come across so many locals expressing their desire to learn sewing, just for simple tasks at home,” owner of Mrs. Stitch Heather Hanneman said. “I knew if we had enough interest, we could potentially cover many skills.”

Hanneman created the “Pauls Valley Sewing Program” group on Facebook to discuss ideas and updates.

“We had a very large interest,” she said. “Over 75 people responded.”

Hanneman said her goal for the group is to teach basic sewing instruction, including how to hem and replace buttons.

“Even in my own home, I always have a need for something to be sewn,” Hanneman said. “Basic skills are invaluable in saving a family time and money.”

Students can choose the date of their first class. Introductory classes will be hosted Nov. 29 or Dec. 13, 6-8 p.m. at the Chip Howard building located at the Garvin County Fairgrounds. Subsequent classes will begin Jan. 3 with the option of one Monday per month. Individuals are asked to arrive a few minutes early to set up their work stations.

All students must reserve the date of their class through the OSU Extension Office by calling 405-238-6681. There are only 15 spots available per class to facilitate one-on-one instruction and social distancing.

Classes are $5 per person. Students are asked to bring a basic sewing kit with a seam ripper, sewing needles, measuring tape, thread, fabric, fabric scissors, pins and a pin cushion, thimble, ruler, cutting mat, plastic bobbins, seam gauges and a sewing machine, if possible.

Hanneman said to notify the OSU Extension Office of any supply needs. There will be a limited number of supply kits for individuals who are unable to purchase their own.

Anyone interested in teaching sewing skills can also contact the OSU Extension. Hanneman said she hopes to have enough volunteers to facilitate larger classes in the future.

A monthly class for advanced sewers is planned to begin after the holidays.
