Three girls are setting an example of empathy in Elmore City.

Fifteen-year-old Brinley Hines, fourteen-year-old Layni Ferris and twelve-year-old Lola Ferris raised $4,200 in donations at a bake sale for Elmore City’s Danna Lauderdale over the weekend.

Lauderdale is battling Atypical Neuroendocrine (Atypical Carcinoid) lung cancer. She is a mother to five boys.

“The bake sale was completely the girls’ idea and planning,” Brinley’s mother, Tonya Hines said. “They started planning it in May.”

Hines said that when the girls announced their idea and asked people to bake treats, the community jumped in to help.

“Everyone in the community and surrounding communities loves Danna and just wanted to do something to help her out,” Hines said. “Everyone in the community also loves these three girls; they are kind to everyone they meet and do what they can to help others.”

This is not the first time the girls raised funds for those battling cancer. In 2019, the trio hosted a bake sale in Brinley’s grandma’s driveway to generate money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. They earned $300.

“Layni and Lola’s mom Cara and I are beyond amazed at these young ladies,” Hines said. “They make us unbelievably proud to be their moms; they have the biggest hearts of anyone we know. We are just amazed at their determination to help others.”

The girls said they are just trying to shine a light on people during rough times and encouraged other kids to do the same.

“You just have to look for ways to help others in your community or other places where there is a need,” they said. “Don’t be scared to reach out, set a goal, try your hardest and work hard for your goals and you will make it happen.”

The three said the best advice they have for all is to be kind.

They said, “You never know when a kind word or a smile could turn someone’s day completely around.”
